French bulldog is the robust and healthy
dog. Nevertheless definite specific illnesses and features are present
at this breed. The Frenchies are known as snoring, but it is necessary
to mark, that not all are. From ten dogs in my nursery only one often
snorts and grunts in an exited state only, two only sometimes, and remaining
practically never. And in strong fever the loud breathing happens for
many bulldogs. It is conditioned by short and curved nasal meatuses what
are usual for this breed. Dogs with reduced (fixed) nostrils snort more
often and more strongly, it is serious lack under the standard.
Rather often Frenchies are subject to allergic responses, and the white
or pied dogs are much more often. It usually starts with combing ears
by a dog, there is an efflux from ears, strong reddening and baldness
of the auricles, the skin on them becomes rough, reinforced. I don't consider
it as illness of ears, this is a consequent, and a cause is an illness
of viscera. So I try to treat from inside. But I don't recommend to the
inexperienced owners of dogs to do it independently, it would be better
to go to the good, experienced veterinarian specializing in illnesses
of dogs.
If the dog is subject to an allergy, it is not necessary to bring up to
a bad condition, you have to go to the veterinarian as soon as will remark
that he again starts to comb ears. Certainly, it is necessary to select
a ration for such dog very carefully, to enter new foodstuff step-by-step,
watching over the reaction of an organism.
I advise to watch over the bulldog in strong fever very closely. Avoid
walking your pet in hot, humid weather and leaving him outdoors for longer
than a few minutes in this climate. Many bulldogs like to lie in a bath
with water or on cool dulle floor in fever. I often lay a wet rag on a
floor of the car (if trips is needed in such weather), the dogs lie on
it with a great pleasure.
Occasionally owners of dogs complain, that the dog "goes on seat".
There are two causes for it - availability of helminthes (it is necessary
to get worming) or an inflammation of paraanal glands (it is necessary
to clean them by veterinarian).
